Sustainable buildings and facilities are critical to a future that is socially just, ecologically restorative, culturally rich and economically viable within the climate change context. Despite over a decade of strategies and programmes, progress on built environment sustainability fails to address these key issues. Consequently, the built environment sector no longer has the luxury of being incrementally less bad, but, with urgency, needs to adopt net-positive, restorative sustainability thinking to incrementally do ‘more good’.
This session will focus on the work that the COST RESTORE project has been achieving in Europe over the last two years to accelerate the adoption and awareness of restorative buildings. The session will review research, collaboration and projects that have emerged from this partnership of 130 organizations and institutions. The panellists will elaborate also on how the Living Building Challenge can bring restorative principles to building projects through this Action across Europe.

QAES. Un progetto … di ampio respiro.

Kick-off la settimana scorsa di QAES (Qualità dell’Aria negli Edifici Scolastici), un progetto coordinato da IDM Südtirol – Alto Adige all’interno del Programma di Cooperazione Interreg V A “Italia – Svizzera 2014-2020”.

Il progetto – espressione di una collaborazione Alto Adige & Ticino – punta a sviluppare la cultura tecnica per il miglioramento della qualità dell’aria (IAQ) nelle scuole. Prevede lo sviluppo di soluzioni tecnologiche a basso impatto architettonico e di un approccio metodologico per classificare, progettare, realizzare, misurare e gestire le condizioni IAQ. L’obiettivo generale quello di risolvere la problematica della scarsa qualità dell’aria negli edifici scolastici; gli studenti vi passano buona parte del loro tempo, tale qualità incide sulla salute e sulla capacità di apprendimento. I partner svilupperanno soluzioni e metodologie in cooperazione con imprese nell’area transfrontaliera: impiantisti di ventilazione meccanica, serramentisti, sistemisti di gestione (ICT), aziende produttrici e distributrici di materiali indoor, studi di progettazione focalizzati sull’IAQ.

Il progetto prevede campagne di misure (prima e dopo interventi dimostrativi di risanamento), oltre all’elaborazione di linee guida per la progettazione e gestione dell’IAQ nelle scuole, a supporto di progettisti, aziende realizzatrici, gestori delle opere e utenti. Gli impatti previsti sono un sensibile aumento delle occasioni imprenditoriali nell’area transfrontaliera e uno sviluppo del know-how sul miglioramento dell’IAQ negli edifici, in particolare nelle scuole. Grazie alla collaborazione transfrontaliera, sarà possibile analizzare e confrontare realtà diverse, per acquisire conoscenze finalizzate allo sviluppo normativo ed economico di questo settore.

L’idea di progetto, nata all’interno del Gruppo di Lavoro “Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ)” coordinato da IDM, è stata successivamente sviluppata in una proposta selezionata tra i 18 vincitori (su 41 proposte presentate) dell’asse Asse I: Competitività delle imprese del bando Interreg IT-CH. Con questo programma lo Stato e le Amministrazioni italiane e svizzere confermano il ruolo strategico della cooperazione transfrontaliera quale punto nevralgico nelle politiche alpine sempre più orientate a promuovere forme virtuose di economia e migliorare la qualità della vita delle persone che abita in queste aree.

La partnership, giudicata dai valutatori come perfettamente bilanciata tra i due territori, comprende dal lato altoatesino IDM Südtirol – Alto Adige (beneficiario capofila), responsabile della gestione e della comunicazione del progetto e della fase di indagine preliminare, Provincia Autonoma Bolzano con il Laboratorio Analisi aria e radioprotezione (Misurazione e monitoraggio), EURAC Research – Istituto per le Energie Rinnovabili (Sviluppo e implementazione delle soluzioni), Agenzia per l’Energia Alto Adige – CasaClima e Comune di Bolzano. Ulteriori stakeholders dell’Alto Adige sono l’Ufficio Manutenzione opere edili e l’Intendenza scolastica, sempre della Provincia di Bolzano. Sul lato svizzero, la Scuola Universitaria Professionale della Svizzera Italiana (SUPSI) è il capofila di una compagine “duale” ticinese che comprende il Cantone Ticino – Sezione della logistica, l’Agenzia Minergie Svizzera italiana, il Municipio della Città di Bellinzona e il Comune di Mendrisio.

I partner lavoreranno insieme per 3 anni con l’obiettivo generale di risolvere la problematica della scarsa qualità dell’aria negli edifici scolastici e gli obiettivi specifici di 1. creare e consolidare una competenza territoriale transfrontaliera tra le imprese su soluzioni – prodotti e servizi – per la qualità ambientale interna degli edifici; 2. aprire un mercato comune per le aziende del settore delle costruzioni nelle regioni coinvolte ed aumentarne la competitività sul mercato europeo, in particolare nelle aree di lingua tedesca; 3. migliorare i processi esistenti o creare nuovi processi per la risoluzione di una problematica generale comune ai due territori – qualità dell’aria interna alle scuole – e che ha implicazioni sociali, sanitarie, educative, economiche e politiche).

Il progettò è finanziato dal Programma di Cooperazione Interreg V A “Italia – Svizzera 2014-2020”.

FACE3 | Final event

Interreg Italy-Austria FACEcamp project has offered a training course aimed at increasing the know-how of companies and freelance professionals operating in the field of complex technological building façades. The course aimed to transfer to freelance professionals and technical staff of construction companies, concepts and innovative methods in the sector of complex technological façades. The educational program had a complete structure regarding the covered topics, to provide innovative concepts, tools and methods, while stimulating the growth of local skills in the construction sector, increasingly subject to environmental and energy regulations.

The course was divided into 6 units, for a total of 15 days. It was characterized by a strong orientation to practice with the participation of experienced speakers, well-known for their skills in the field. All contents have been conceived and designed to address the main themes of concept, design, calculation, production, installation and maintenance of complex building facades. A study trip to Milan was organized to closely analyse significant examples of technological innovation in the field of façades.

We are inviting you to the final event with public presentations of the results, that will take place on Thursday, December 6th, h 10-17 at NOI Techpark, Bolzano (Italy). You can download the full program here.

#S3 – LOTUS A3 – 14:30-16:00 – Creating Biophilic Buildings for a Regenerative Future, by the International Living Future Institute.

As part of our Living Building Challenge – workshop series, Living Future Europe, will deliver a series of workshops to enable participants to expand their regenerative design capabilities and integrate concepts into their practices such as Biophilic Design. The event includes the following workshop: “How to create truly biophilic and regenerative buildings and communities”. This workshop is aimed at architects, engineers, developers and product manufacturers interested in innovative and transformative solutions, providing insights from leaders in the green building community through real-world examples while providing tools and techniques that can be applied in the local French context.

Spaces are limited to 60 for this training opportunity. The workshop will be animated in English with possible interactions in French thanks to the translation of Estelle Cruz and Louise Hamot.

Dans le cadre de notre série d’ateliers sur le Living Building Challenge, Living Future Europe propose des ateliers pour permettre aux participants d’approfondir leurs compétences en conception régénérative et d’intégrer ces concepts dans leurs pratiques comme la conception biophilique. Cet événement correspond au workshop suivant: “Comment créer des bâtiments et communautés régénérateurs”. Cet atelier s’adresse aux architectes, ingénieurs, développeurs et fabricants de produits intéressés par des solutions innovatrices et transformatrices, offrant une réflexion menée par des leaders de la communauté de la construction écologique anglo-saxonne à travers des exemples concrets tout en fournissant des outils et techniques qui peuvent être appliqués dans le contexte français local.

Les places sont limitées à 60 personnes pour cette occasion. L’atelier sera animé en anglais avec des interactions possibles en français grâce aux traduction de Estelle Cruz et Louise Hamot.

  • Estelle Cruz, Architecte-ingénieur, Chargée de mission Habitat du Ceebios. A young state-certified architect and engineering student, Estelle followed the dual courses of architecture and engineering at ENSAL and Ecole Centrale de Lyon. Passionate about biomimicry, she undertook a one-year “biomimicry world tour” // Jeune Architecte diplômée d’Etat et élève ingénieur (en cours de validation d’acquis), Estelle a suivit le double cursus architecte-ingénieur de l’ENSAL et Ecole Centrale de Lyon. Passionnée par le biomimétisme, elle a entrepris durant un an un “tour du monde du biomimétisme”.

Industry 4.0 is the name given to the new era of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies, including the Internet of things (IoT), cyber-physical systems, cloud- and cognitive computing. This is or it is expected to be the fourth industrial revolution … Ok, nice, but what about sustainability? When it comes to sustainability, still today the cornerstones of the discussion are the concept of a sustainable development (1987, 31 years ago) and the triple bottom line (1994, 24 years ago)…

How can digitalization follow through this transition in the concept of sustainability? Is the new generation of skilled professionals of the digital design age capable to embed the new principles of sustainability in their every day work? How can we restore a balanced relationship between humans and nature – inside and outside our buildings, districts, communities – exploiting the new tools that industry 4.0 make us available? The main focus of the Conference Week in Malaga, organized in the frame of Cost Action CA16114 RESTORE CA16114, is the Digital Implementation of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and Regenerative Sustainable Design principles in the practice of design. Via the integrated use of freeware digital parametric modelling, the discussed challenges are to adapt to climate change, improve outdoor microclimate qualities and indoor health/ wellbeing, operating a transformation that responds to the criteria of Circular Economy.
