Ho usato queste immagini della Marmolada (quella sopra è per gentile concessione di Franco Secchieri, 2019) all’inizio delle mie presentazioni fino a tre anni fa. Poi ho smesso, mi sembrava che la gente si annoiasse o forse non ci faceva caso più di tanto. Così sostituivo l’inizio con qualcosa del tipo “non c’è bisogno che vi mostri le solite immagini catastrofiche, tanto sapete già, passiamo oltre, a parlare di soluzioni“.

Dopo quello che è successo sulla Marmolada ieri, nelle nostre aree alpine, in Trentino, non posso che pensare di nuovo a quelle immagini, che forse andrebbero sempre mostrate, non dandole mai per scontate. Ho appena sentito alla radio una giornalista che, intervistando un ricercatore del principale centro di ricerca pubblico nazionale, si stupiva ancora del fatto che fra un po’ non ci saranno più ghiacciai sulle Alpi. Ha domandato “Ma se ci mettessimo a comportarci virtuosamente, in quanto tempo potremo ripristinare la situazione?“. “Secoli“, la risposta. Silenzio …

Siamo nel mezzo di un cambiamento epocale, con la frustrazione che forse, anche dando il massimo, anche facendo del nostro meglio, non basterebbe. La sfida è immensa, servono decisioni coraggiose, illuminate, veloci, efficaci e condivise. Politiche, finanziarie, industriali, sociali, culturali, scolastiche, tutto. Serve ribaltare gli schemi e i paradigmi.

Mi domando se ce la faremo.

I used these images of the Marmolada (the one above is courtesy of Franco Secchieri, 2019) to open my presentations up to three years ago. Then I stopped, it seemed to me that people got bored or maybe they didn’t pay much attention to it. So, I replaced my opening comments with something like “There is no need for me to show you the usual catastrophic images, as you already know, let’s move on, let’s talk about solutions.”

After what happened on the Marmolada yesterday, in our alpine areas, in Trentino, I’m thinking of those images again, which should always be shown, never taking them for granted. I just heard on the radio a journalist who, interviewing a researcher from the main Italian public research centre, was still amazed by the fact that in a while there will be no more glaciers in the Alps. “But if we started behaving virtuously – she asked – how long will it take to restore the previous situation?” “Centuries,” was the answer. Silence …

We are in the midst of an epochal change, with the frustration that even doing our best, would not be enough. The challenge is immense, we need courageous, enlightened, quick, effective, and shared decisions. Political, financial, industrial, social, cultural, educational, everything. We need to overturn the schemes and paradigms.

I wonder if we’ll make it.
