A Living Future for Europe.

Living Future Europe Becomes Formal Entity, with Green Building and Market Demand Growing Across the Continent.

Seattle/Bolzano – In December 2019 Ursula von der Leyen, newly-appointed President of the European Commission, said, “I want Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent in the world by 2050… to make this happen, we must take bold steps together…

By the urging of–and overwhelming support from–our volunteer Network and European community, the International Living Future Institute has risen to Ursula von der Leyen’s challenge in Europe and is poised to raise the bar on sustainable development across the continent.

In order to ensure a stronger presence in Europe and an even better connection with the building industry, ILFI has formally established Living Future Europe (LFE), a new legal entity and nonprofit association. LFE’s mission coincides closely to that of ILFI’s: to make the world work for 100 percent of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous cooperation without ecological offense or disadvantage to anyone, and catalyzing the transformation toward communities that are socially just, culturally rich, and ecologically restorative.

New Year, new Facilitators.

I nuovi Facilitator del Living Future Italy Collaborative.

(English text follows)

Attualmente esistono 120+ Living Future Collaboratives nel mondo, oltre agli International Affiliates: Australia, Europe, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates. I Collaborative affiancano ILFI nella missione di guidare la trasformazione verso un mondo socialmente giusto, culturalmente ricco ed ecologicamente rigenerativo.

What a year for Living Future Europe :-)

With the support of our Founding Circle Sponsors, we lead this year the way to creating a Living Future in Europe through the Living Future Europe Initiative.

We launched our Declare Europe label last January. Our volunteer Network hosted more than 50 events in the year that spanned 33 cities in 19 different European countries, around two times the number of events held in 2018! These events reached almost 3,000 leading practitioners looking to build Living Buildings.

Following Ursula von der Leyen, new President of the European Commission’s goal: “I want Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent in the world by 2050… to make this happen, we must take bold steps together.”

Our focus in 2020 will be to educate and assist a broader audience of interested practitioners on how to build Living Building Challenge projects in Europe and help spur demand for healthy, transparent materials and Declare and Living Products.

Thanks to all our incredible LF Ambassadors and Collaboratives across #Europe for your amazing commitment. We are looking forward to working with you in 2020 😉

Thanks to our Sponsors for helping us making this possible. Let’s join forces for an even more brilliant 2020!

Thanks to Amanda Sturgeon, James Connelly, Sunni Wissmer, Miranda Berger for your tireless support, it’s a pleasure working with you and all the colleagues at the International Living Future Institute #timetoactisnow the best is yet to come, cheers and best Season’s Greetings 😊

It’s all about performances.

The Future Envelope 12
& FACEcamp Results Seminar

Conference on Building Envelopes
20-21 May 2019, NOI Techpark, Bolzano (Italy)

It’s all about performances.

New design tool and approaches, and innovative construction methods are enabling architects and engineers to conceive and develop increasingly complex and daring building envelopes. This process is rapidly reshaping our built environment, and transforming the concept of building envelope itself, which is no longer a passive and static element that only separates the indoor environment from the outdoor world. In this fast changing context, one of the major issues is the evaluation of the performances of such complex façade systems. The different functions of a complex building envelope have their respective requirements, and hence designers have to analyze and ensure the performances of overall faced system.

The aim of “Facade performances” is therefore to provide insights into the performances of these innovative building envelopes considering on four thematic areas, namely architecture, energy, comfort, and economics and management. Hence, the focus will be on the shape of the new envelopes, on their implications on the overall building energy consumption, on the comfort experienced by the occupants of these buildings, and on the financial performances and the new business models that are part of these innovative solutions. For each topic, three leading experts will be invited from research and academia, design firms, and construction companies respectively to share a wide range of experiences, ideas, and visions.

The conference organization is led by IDM South Tyrol & EURAC Research, supported by Free University of Bolzano, University of Innsbruck, and Politecnico of Milano as scientific partners, and in cooperation with the European Façade Network (EFN). This event is funded by the ITA-AUT Interreg project FACEcamp being the project final conference.

Sustainable buildings and facilities are critical to a future that is socially just, ecologically restorative, culturally rich and economically viable within the climate change context. Despite over a decade of strategies and programmes, progress on built environment sustainability fails to address these key issues. Consequently, the built environment sector no longer has the luxury of being incrementally less bad, but, with urgency, needs to adopt net-positive, restorative sustainability thinking to incrementally do ‘more good’.
This session will focus on the work that the COST RESTORE project has been achieving in Europe over the last two years to accelerate the adoption and awareness of restorative buildings. The session will review research, collaboration and projects that have emerged from this partnership of 130 organizations and institutions. The panellists will elaborate also on how the Living Building Challenge can bring restorative principles to building projects through this Action across Europe.

So, what are you waiting for? … Ready to jojn us at #LF19? Registration here. See you in Seattle 😉

Carlo Battisti is Chair of the COST Action 16114 RESTORE and European Executive Director for the International Living Future Institute.
