– 3 days at the Green Apple Day of Service with Macro Design Studio in Cavareno, Italy, September 26th.
After the event last September 2014 in Arco, also this year Macro Design Studio is providing voluntarily its services for the Green Apple Day, organized by the Center for Green Schools of USGBC. There will be more than 500 events this year, all over the world. The “Peter Pan is Green” project, that will take place at the kindergarten “Peter Pan” in Cavareno, is the only registered event in Italy (one of the two in Europe) under this program. Macro Design Studio is the sustainability partner of the Municipality of Cavareno, this so nice 1,000 inhabitants village in Non Valley, Trentino (Italy) and it is working with local teachers and administrators to highlight how sustainability could find its fertile soil in the classrooms.
The “Peter Pan” kindergarten will feature on Saturday 26th, September different activities related to the “Educate”, “Take It Outside” and “Waste Not” event topics created by the Center for Green Schools. This is the agenda for the day.
09:20 – 10:40 Ancient seeds (for children)
09:30 – 10:10 Green tour (I)
10:40 – 12:00 Re-place (for children)
11:00 – 11:40 Green tour (II)
12:00 – 12:30 Organic drinks
Green tour (“Educate”)
Guided tour with the designers, to explore the green technical features of the school. Target group: school parents, architects and engineers, public administrators, teachers. The school features several green performances: waste is 100 % differentiated, rainwater is harvested for garden irrigation and toilet flushing, heating system and domestic hot water for the building are guaranteed by the municipal biomass district heating, just to mention a few. More over the school was built through the redevelopment of two existent historic buildings with a bio-compatible timber structure saving embodied energy and CO2 emissions.
Ancient seeds (“Take It Outside”)
Educational game for pupils, in the outside garden. Pupils are taught to pick up autochthone seeds (e.g. beans) growing locally from more than forty years. Seeds are taken from local plants and not purchased from other markets. There are also some voluntaries conserving during the years seeds picked up by the children. The aim is to preserve local species and biodiversity. To this extent the school has become “guardian of ancient seeds” (beans, calendula, nasturtium, wheat, cornflower, etc.).
Re-place (“Waste Not”)
Educational game for pupils. Pupils are taught and encouraged to create new toys using waste materials. More than recycling, we can define it upcycling because new objects have a greater value than previous poor materials where they come from. Materials are typically: wood, plastic, paper, textiles. Also broken toys can be used to assembly new toys.
At the end of the morning, before lunch, drinks and beverages will be provided to the attendees, prepared using local organic products.
